“ But your snapchat looks like CCTV ”

Apple vs Android, the infamous and on-going debate that has rattled the masses. You aNdRoID users are so triggered when it comes to this argument, it’s unbelievable. I mean, we all use our phones to do the same things: watch YouTube; send WhatsApp messages and post pictures. However, both operating systems face very different security threats which means we are never fully secure when using these devices.

So, which one is safer to use?

App store vs Play store

The main reason why iOS is secure is because it’s a very closed system and Apple has a very tight screening process when letting developers create applications for them. Apple is also stricter about which apps can be on the app store, so you may notice that Android devices have applications that Apple does not have. Giving consumers the freedom to customise and have full control of their mobiles has been one of the advantages of having an Android device. Apple users can have this ability, but it would require the user to jailbreak their iPhone. Doing this will give them freedom, but at what cost? Once your iPhone is jailbroken you won’t be able to get the latest software updates, leaving your phone vulnerable to having your personal information stolen; not least also voiding the warranty on your iPhone.

Android is secure as long as the user takes the right precautions. I say this because Android allows users to download apps that are not on the play store and this poses a risk. It’s also easier to get apps added to the play store, so malicious apps can slip past the security screenings. That being said, Android isn’t full of viruses, but the freedom it gives its consumers makes it easier for them to do as they please.

Another reason as to why Apple is more secure than Android is because Android has many devices that it runs on. OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) like LG, Nokia and Huawei are all different and their security features vary between them. However, Apple isn’t entirely safe either. We have all heard of our celeb crushes having their iCloud photos leaked, thus raising concerns and posing the question of how do these hackers get access to data stored securely on the cloud?

How do they protect our data?

iCloud protects data by encrypting it when it’s in transit, storing it in iCloud in an encrypted format and using secure tokens for authentication. Apple uses end-to-end encryption which means that only you can access your information, and only on devices where you’re signed into iCloud. Apple  also won’t be able to access this information.

Not all Android devices are substandard though. Take for example Samsung, they use the Knox security platform to secure their devices and provide privacy via encryption. The Knox security platform isolates, encrypts and secures personal data from credit cards to passwords and health data. It does this by defining what data an application can access. Samsung devices do also offer kernel* protection and this is very vital to the overall security. Nonetheless, I would take the time to see how your Android device protects your data as this is what’s most important.

Now, this blog may imply that the Android platform is not secure… (oop) but it is more secure than it was in the past. After speaking with friends who have used both Apple and Android platforms, the majority have preferred Android devices because they are easier to use, cheaper and more practical.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t persuade me and even though you might say I’m heavily biased, I do love Apple products. Irregardless, both Android and Apple are still susceptible to phishing attacks where hackers can gain access to our login details. Thinking about it, I may have to do a part two because there is a lot more to discuss when comparing these two operating systems.
